Caroline Smoot, Esq.

Staff Attorney

Caroline Smoot joined SeniorLAW Center as a staff attorney in April 2019 as a member of SeniorLAW Center’s Homeownership Rights and Victim Services teams, advocating for and representing older homeowners and victims of elder abuse and financial exploitation.

Caroline began her legal career as a tax attorney intern for General Motors Corporation. She served as managing attorney at a Federal Tax Law Clinic for Legal Services Alabama and also represented taxpayers in U.S. Tax Court and also traveled throughout 67 counties representing taxpayers in state court and providing community outreach. She also gave presentations and trained pro bono attorneys representing low-income taxpayers in tax disputes with the Internal Revenue Service. Caroline also served as an attorney for the Internal Revenue Service in Washington, DC and as a Sales & Use Tax attorney for the State of New Jersey, Division of Taxation.

Caroline is a graduate of Tennessee State University where she was an Oprah Winfrey Scholar. She earned her law degree from Western Michigan Law School and her LL.M in Taxation from Villanova Law School. Caroline is licensed to practice law in Pennsylvania, the District of Columbia, and before the United States Tax Court. During her collegiate years, Caroline served as President of Phi Delta Phi International Legal Fraternity where she spearheaded community service projects focusing on the needs of the elderly, victims of domestic abuse, juveniles and the homeless. Prior to law school, Caroline served as a high school teacher in Detroit, Michigan.
