When his elderly mother died, 63-year-old “Frank” returned to Philadelphia to care for his 84-year-old father, who suffers from dementia. Immediately after his mother’s funeral, Frank’s niece, who had been living in the home, brandished a gun and threatened to kill him and everyone in the home…then later beat Frank with a metal pipe. Frank was taken to the emergency room with head trauma. The niece was arrested and convicted of possession of an instrument of crime with intent, simple assault, and terroristic threats with intent to terrorize another. SeniorLAW Center staff represented Frank in his Protection from Abuse case. We were successful in obtaining a three-year, final protection order for Frank and worked with Frank to help him find counseling, respite care, home repairs and other resources for support so that he and his elderly dad could live in peace. Two generations in need.

Property and Inheritance Tax Aid for Elders

Launched in February 2013 with the generous award of an ABA Section of Taxation Public Service Fellowship, SeniorLAW Center’s newest project, Property and Inheritance Tax Aid for Elders, provides the following services for seniors:

Free legal representation and counsel to help seniors facing real estate tax and inheritance tax issues affecting homeownership and shelter
Free legal assistance to help seniors sort out tangled titles to their homes, so that the deeds to their homes will be in their own names
Community education and outreach to help seniors facing crippling real estate tax debt

Ade B. Galloway engages in a diverse mergers and acquisitions, securities, financing and transactional practice. Prior to joining the firm’s corporate section, Ade was a member of the commercial litigation practice group, where he focused on commercial and securities litigation.

Ade’s recent representations have included:

Served as a member of the firm’s post-closing due diligence team during representation of an international energy company’s $1.7 billion Marcellus Shale joint venture.

Served as a key member of the firm’s transaction team during representation of an international chemicals manufacturing company’s sale of its medical device business division.

Served as a key member of the firm’s transaction team during representation of an investment advisor company’s purchase of over $3 billion in managed assets.

Served as a key member of the firm’s transaction team during representation of an international chemicals manufacturing company’s $33 million purchase of the organic peroxide division of an American chemicals company.

Represented a public corporation throughout the application process for its original securities listing on the New York Stock Exchange.

While attending law school, Ade volunteered with the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA), which provides free tax assistance to persons with low to moderate income. Additionally, Ade interned with the D.C. Law Students in Court Program, where he assisted families with landlord/tenant issues and small claims disputes.

Before earning his law degree, Ade worked as an investment client services representative for Wachovia Securities and CSFBdirect, where he analyzed CAP (asset management), IRA and brokerage accounts, and facilitated customer trades in securities and options.

In November 2000, he earned his Series 7 and 63 Securities Brokers licenses.

SeniorLAW’s Larry Felzer selected to receive Temple Law Alumni Association Diversity Award

We are delighted to announce that Lawrence Felzer, SeniorLAW Center’s Director of Development and Finance, will receive the Temple Law Alumni Association (TLAA) Diversity Award for his many years and diverse efforts promoting and advocating for the LGBT community. This award honors a Temple Law graduate who has demonstrated a strong commitment, and made a substantial contribution, to diversity and to promoting full and equal participation and inclusion in the legal profession. The awards will be presented at the TLAA Annual Meeting on Monday, June 10^th, 2013 at 5:00 p.m. at City Hall.

Larry Felzer’s entire career has been focused on empowering diverse and disenfranchised communities, fighting discrimination and inequality, and promoting diversity and inclusion. Larry is an outspoken, passionate, public and proud member and leader of the Lesbian, Gay,Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community and the legal community. As a lawyer, mentor, Bar leader, and advocate, Larry has promoted the rights of and raised awareness and visibility of the LGBT and other minority communities over the past 20 years. With great passion, eloquence, leadership, energy and his trademark wit, Larry has advocated for and promoted inclusion, equality, and vibrant participation of minorities in the legal profession and in the community at large in extraordinary and far-reaching ways. The powerful impact of his life is reflective of the ideals of the prestigious Temple Law Alumni Association Diversity Leadership Award.

Kila B. Baldwin is an attorney with Kline & Specter, P.C. where her practice is focused on personal injury cases, including medical malpractice, product liability, and premises liability. Ms. Baldwin was selected in 2011 and 2012 as a Pennsylvania Super Lawyer — Rising Star, designating her as among the top 2.5 percent of attorneys in the state who are 40 or younger.

Most recently, Baldwin was co-counsel in a case that produced the largest-ever personal injury verdict in Pennsylvania. In December 2012, a jury in Allegheny County awarded $109 million to the family of a woman who was killed when a West Penn Power electric line fell on her in her own yard.

Baldwin earned a dual J.D./M.B.A. from the Temple University Beasley School of Law, where she studied international law in Rome. Later, while a practicing attorney, she again attended Temple and graduated in 2010 from the LL.M. Program in Trial Advocacy, where she subsequently was appointed as an adjunct lecturer.

Baldwin earned her bachelor’s degree in economics from Pennsylvania State University, where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa and was a member of the Schreyer Honors College.

She is also an elected member of the Pennsylvania Association for Justice Board of Governors and the Attorneys Information Exchange Group, a national litigation group for attorneys handling vehicle defect and transportation-related accident cases. Baldwin is a member of the Pennsylvania Bar Association and the Philadelphia Trial Lawyers Association. She is past president of the board of directors of The Women’s Therapy Center, a Philadelphia non-profit organization that helps provide mental health care to low-income patients.

Kila has a strong interest in protecting the rights of seniors, and has represented senior clients on a pro bono basis in her own practice.
