SUMMARY:SeniorLAW Center CLE Training: Volunteer Attorney Training: Assisting Older Adults through the Pennsylvania SeniorLAW HelpLine
DESCRIPTION:Volunteer to help PA’s aging population. Participants will be trained to provide legal advice\, information\, and referrals by telephone to older adults across Pennsylvania who call the PA SeniorLAW HelpLine with civil legal issues. The training will focus on common areas of law requested by callers\, the logistics of handling a HelpLine call and the professional responsibility requirements of pro bono and helpline service.  We will also discuss SeniorLAW Center’s Grandparents Raising Grandchildren project.  In Pennsylvania\, over 89\,000 grandparents are raising grandchildren due to parental unavailability.  We will discuss the legal needs of these grandparents\, and how pro bono attorneys can provide legal assistance through SeniorLAW Center.  This is a limited representation opportunity and volunteers will be able to choose the area(s) of law on which they will focus when counseling callers. \n************************************************************************ \nThis course will train attorneys to provide legal counseling through the Pennsylvania SeniorLAW HelpLine\, a toll-free telephone service offering free\, confidential legal advice\, brief services\, and information and referrals to older adults statewide.  Course materials and online links will arm attorneys with the resources to provide legal advice and information\, as well as quality referrals\, on a variety of topics.  Links to referral directories (city and state) will be provided through SeniorLAW Center’s website\, to allow participants quick access to myriad resources while handling HelpLine calls. \nThe course is free. 1.5 CLE credits (1 substantive/.5 ethics) are available pending approval with the CLE Board for those attendees who agree to staff the SeniorLAW HelpLine for two 2-hour shifts. This is limited representation which can be performed from the office or at home. Register with Joanna Jarzebowska by October 20\, 2024.

SUMMARY:SeniorLAW Center 2022 Storytelling Fundraising Campaign
DESCRIPTION:  \nEarly Sponsors: Click here to purchase your sponsorship!\n\nDear Reader:\nThis year\, in place of our annual Gala\, SeniorLAW Center is hosting an inclusive and interactive Storytelling Fundraising Campaign. \nNo cocktails. No reception. No black tie. No awards. This year\, we focus on access to justice and the stories of those who came before us. We made this decision for two reasons… \nFirst\, it just didn’t seem right for SeniorLAW Center to host an in-person celebration this year\, as the population we serve continues to be disproportionately affected by COVID-19 and its loss and hardships. \nSecond\, we are forever inspired by the stories we hear through our work. It just made good sense to create a space for us to share these stories with one another and to support the thousands of older people we serve each year who face poverty\, homelessness\, abuse. \nToday\, we invite you to be a part of our Storytelling Fundraising Campaign by being an Early Sponsor. \nAt SeniorLAW Center\, we are reminded every day of the transformative impact that we have on the lives of vulnerable older people. We witness the lived experiences of our clients as they alter perspectives\, change laws\, improve lives. \nJoin us by supporting the essential work we do to pursue justice in aging. And join us by sharing a story of an older person who had a powerful impact on your life. I lost my mom this year. I yearn to tell her story of the challenges she overcame and how she helped make me the woman\, the leader\, the mom I am today. \nHere’s what we have planned. Starting on April 27\, National Tell A Story Day\, SeniorLAW Center will launch the first in a series of eblasts\, social media posts\, website enhancements in which we will post clients\, staff\, partners\, friends\, and donors sharing their stories about the role a special older person has played in their lives. \nWe will encourage participants to tell their stories in any way or ways that they wish. A brief cell phone video….a short written piece… a group of photographs …whatever way is best. \nWe will share different posts at least once per week\, through June 30\, offering many opportunities for donors to support and people to share their stories with us and with every member of the wide SeniorLAW Center community. \nAs an Early Sponsor\, you will receive several wonderful benefits\, including public recognition/logo placement in all our Storytelling Fundraising Campaign eblasts\, social media posts\, and on SeniorLAW Center’s website. \nOnce the Storytelling Fundraising Campaign concludes at the end of June\, SeniorLAW Center will memorialize all shared stories in a special page on our website. We will proudly acknowledge many of our Storytelling Fundraising Campaign sponsors on this webpage through the end of December. \nWe make positive change happen through the stories we hear\, the stories we help write\, the stories we share with one another\, the stories that make everyone’s life better. \nThis year\, as we tell stories\, emerge from the pandemic\, and tirelessly seek justice for older people in need\, please consider giving or renewing your support. \nTo be a Storytelling Fundraising Campaign Early Sponsor\, follow the link here or at the top of the page and complete the sponsorship form by Friday\, April 22. That way\, we can list you in our inaugural posts and eblasts. This is a new way of doing things in a time that is unprecedented. We think it will be powerful. We hope you will join us. \nVery truly yours\, \n \nKaren C. Buck\nExecutive Director

SUMMARY:The Nuts and Bolts of Representing Grandparents Raising Grandchildren
DESCRIPTION:SeniorLAW Center offers free CLE training during National Pro Bono Week 2021\nThe Nuts and Bolts of Representing Grandparents Raising Grandchildren\nOver 100\,000 children in Pennsylvania are being raised by grandparents when birth parents are unable. Parental absence occurs for a variety of reasons\, including addiction\, incarceration\, illness\, or death. Therefore\, grandfamilies are created due to familial trauma\, which may be further exacerbated if they have legal needs regarding custody\, but no access to advice\, counsel\, and/or representation. The Secretary of Aging estimates that grandparents in Pennsylvania are saving the Commonwealth at least $1 billion by serving in this role\, avoiding foster care and other costs. \nJoin us to learn procedures and practice tips to effectively advocate for Grandparents Raising Grandchildren in custody matters. We will explore the needs and challenges of these intergenerational families\, relevant statutes regarding third-party custody\, including the issue of standing\, and provide practical information on how to prepare and file an action in court to help strengthen these families and provide permanency planning for children at risk. Moreover\, we will provide samples of all required documents. The focus will be Philadelphia County; however\, we will provide a brief overview regarding the neighboring counties and how they differ in their procedures as well. \nGrandparents raising grandchildren often face unique obstacles as third parties in custody disputes\, and after receiving the knowledge and tools provided in this CLE\, you will be well-equipped to join the effort to support this vulnerable population and the heroic role grandparents are taking on. Pro bono attorneys make an enormous difference in the lives of these families at both ends of the life cycle. We hope you will join us in this work. \nDate: Tuesday\, October 26\, 2021\nTime: 10:00 am\nDuration: 60 min to earn 1 Substantive Credit\nCost: FREE\nPresenters: Janine Dunlap Kiah\, Esq.\, Project Director\, SeniorLAW Center; Heather Kelly\, Esq.\, Staff Attorney\, SeniorLAW Center \nHow: Zoom Video Conference (Link provided upon registration)\nAdvance Registration Required \nTo Register: \nFor questions\, please contact: Heather Kelly\, Esq.\, hkelly@seniorlawcenter.org\, or visit https://seniorlawcenter.org/events/.
