SeniorLAW Center proudly provides legal, educational and advocacy services to Hispanic elders in their own neighborhoods and language to protect their legal rights, increase access to justice and services, promote knowledge and awareness of legal rights and issues, help prevent legal problems before they occur, and address barriers of isolation, culture, language and disabilities.

DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT:

Philadelphia’s senior citizens experience a higher poverty rate than their peers in other parts of Pennsylvania and the nation. Hispanic elders in our community face even more devastating poverty rates: almost 40% of Philadelphia’s Hispanic elderly live in poverty. One in three elderly Philadelphia residents is a minority individual, and more than half of those 65 and over who speak Spanish speak little or no English. All of these conditions — age, economic need, isolation, language, culture, and age-related disabilities — pose significant obstacles to accessing legal services and information.

Providing a bilingual bicultural legal representative who can also communicate with them in their native language is the key to this program’s success, making it culturally sensitive, knowledgeable, and empowering. Our Coordinator of this program, Margarita Martinez, is a native of Colombia and received degrees from and practiced law in Colombia and Spain before emigrating to the U.S.

SERVING WHO?

SeniorLAW Center has been committed to language access and serving diverse populations, including those with Limited English, for decades. We are at the forefront of serving immigrant and minority elders and in finding creative and innovative ways to provide meaningful access to services. In order to provide services to Hispanic elders in a comfortable environment, in their own language and neighborhood, the coordinator of the program offers them directly at our community-based legal clinics. These include venues focused on Hispanic seniors from all parts of the Spanish-speaking world.

WHAT WE DO TO HELP

SeniorLAW Center offers bilingual bicultural services for Hispanic elders, holding monthly community-based legal clinics in Hispanic communities in Kensington and North Philadelphia at senior centers focusing on Spanish-speaking elders from Puerto Rico, Mexico, Cuba, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, the Dominican Republic and other countries. We conduct legal education workshops, professional trainings, pro bono projects, and work with Hispanic community media and a broad range of partners to best serve the legal needs of Hispanic elders.
