SeniorLAW Center fights elder abuse, neglect and exploitation as a key priority of our work. Elder abuse is a human rights issue. Each year, the international community renews its commitment to addressing elder abuse, recognizing that it damages public health and threatens millions of our parents, grandparents, and friends. It is a crisis that knows no borders or socio-economic lines. On World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, join us as we strengthen our resolve to replace neglect with care and exploitation with respect.
Here’s how we are marking World Elder Abuse Awareness Day in 2014:
- Sharing President Obama’s Presidential proclamation which states: America must lead by example, and my Administration remains dedicated to ending elder abuse, supporting victims, and holding abusers accountable.
- Financial exploitation breakfast at City Hall June 11, 2014 with leaders of financial institutions, Police Chief Ramsey and the collaborative Philadelphia Financial Exploitation Prevention Task Force. SeniorLAW Center is proud to be a member of the collaborative Philadelphia Financial Exploitation Prevention Task Force, bringing together advocates, law enforcement, protective services, financial institutions and others to prevent and address senior financial exploitation, which devastates seniors and their families in diverse communities across the country, touching all economic, racial and cultural sectors. - Montgomery County Elder Justice event June 13, 2014: SeniorLAW Center is participating in the Montgomery County Elder Access to Justice Roundtable’s 2nd annual symposium, this year focusing on Planning Ahead: Guardianships and Powers of Attorney. The event, held in conjunction with World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (June15), features professionals in the fields of law, aging, law enforcement, medicine and social work. Executive Director Karen Buck and Legal Director Wendy Bookler both serve on the Roundtable and Dana Goldberg, Project SAFE Coordinator, is a featured speaker on abuse of powers of attorney and financial exploitation of seniors. - PA Supreme Court Elder Law Task Force gathering June 17-18, 2014 (Harrisburg): SeniorLAW Center is proud to be a member of the PA Supreme Court’s first Elder Law Task Force, 38 members appointed to work under the leadership of Justice Debra Todd to address elder abuse, guardianship and access to justice. The Task Force is convening June 17-18, 2014 for our third gathering and will release a report on findings later this year.
