WHY ARE YOU INVOLVED WITH SENIORLAW CENTER?

I learned of and was inspired by the commitment of Philadelphia’s legal community to the city’s elderly population, going back to 1978, when they organized a legal support organization which became the SeniorLaw Center. My original exposure in 29014-15 occurred because of a pro bono, strategic planning engagement for the SeniorLAW Center of which I was a part. The commitment exemplified by the Staff and Board of the SeniorLAW Center impressed me more, given its services are dedicated to those whose financial resources are also severely limited. At a time in our history, when remarkable income discrepancies are evident within our communities, the time, energy and resources devoted by this organization to this segment of the population strike me as particularly noble, generous and needed.

HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR BOARD MEMBERSHIP / LEADERSHIP?

There are many highlights, but one stands out. In August 2017, I participated in a series of Service Days, shadowing members of the SeniorLAW Center staff as they went about a normal business day. I sat in on interview sessions that addressed specific client problems,  attending hearings in Family Court and witnessed the negotiation of resolutions in Eviction Court. I was able to observe first-hand the dedication and the professional competency of staff member. I witnessed how the SeniorLAW Center mission and objectives are being served daily. I was able to connect with real people with real issues, rather than simply confronting pages of statistics presented and recounted at a monthly Board meeting.

WHY DO YOU THINK OTHERS SHOULD SUPPORT SENIORLAW CENTER?

The compassion and empathy for others, without regard for their age, health or economic conditions defines the kind of community in which we live. Supporting (whether financially, as a volunteer or in any way available) the individual’s right to legal advice and support enables and strengthens our community. It gives our community resilience and benefits each of us. It benefits community in which we work, play, raise our families as a whole. The work being done by the SeniorLAW Center sets an example for Philadelphia, Southwestern Pennsylvania, the Commonwealth and, ultimately the entire country. It is an example hard-earned and well-deserved, of which all can be especially proud.
