Navient Settlement Reached in Student Loan Lawsuit

JAN 18 – America’s student loan crisis impacts hundreds of thousands of current and former students, including older borrowers. This crisis is often exacerbated by predatory loan services which steer borrowers into costly payment plans.

Last week, student loan giant Navient reached a settlement with Americans saddled with student loan debt, providing $1.7 billion in loan forgiveness and cancellation for victims of unfair loan service practices.

SeniorLAW Center, along with other advocates, had previously filed an amicus brief offering insight to the impact of Navient’s predatory practices, including their impact on older borrowers, as well as on black and brown borrowers whom Navient often targeted.

Our fight for the rights of older people encompasses all areas of justice, and the student loan crisis is no exception. Read SeniorLAW Center’s amicus brief here. To learn more about the settlement details, visit the link here.
