Washington, D.C. – Today at 12:00 p.m., U.S. Representative Matt Cartwright (PA-08) will host a video press conference to discuss legislation he will introduce to bolster statewide legal hotlines for older Americans. He will be joined by Republican U.S. Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (PA-01) — who will co-sponsor the bill — as well as the Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Aging and the executive director of the Pennsylvania SeniorLAW Center.
The COVID-19 outbreak has made the need for accessible legal services for seniors even more urgent. As millions of older Americans on fixed incomes follow social distancing guidance and remain home, they require free and remote legal assistance to deal with issues including financial exploitation, housing, elder abuse, and access to care. The Department of Justice is already warning about a rise of fraud schemes related to the coronavirus pandemic, and older Americans remain vulnerable to these scams.
