SeniorLAW Center

Samuel F. Fels Fund Summer 2014 Internship in Community Service

SeniorLAW Center seeks a Community Service Intern to assistant in expansion of access by Philadelphia seniors to our HelpLine through which we provide free legal information, advice, counseling and referrals. Applicants must be graduate students who will begin, are in, or have completed a graduate or professional (law, medicine, etc.) program in calendar year 2014. These internships are full-time and take place over ten weeks in the summer. The intern will be paid a stipend awarded by the Fels Fund.

Our HelpLine attorneys advise on helping seniors save their homes, preventing eviction by their landlords, protection from elder abuse and domestic violence, preventing and combating consumer fraud and financial exploitation, enabling them to plan for their future health care and financial care, and on many other civil legal matters.  We anticipate having a graduate law student help us develop a strategic plan to increase the number of callers SeniorLAW Center is able to service annually by: expanding the number of volunteer pro bono attorneys we recruit from the legal community, training them on our practices and procedures and then promptly referring callers to them for their advice and expertise, supplemented by resource materials supplied by SeniorLAW Center.  The project will include researching similar helplines throughout the country and utilizing those findings to recommend whether SeniorLAW Center should develop a plan for instituting online intake.  To apply please send a one page cover letter and a resume to Wendy E. Bookler, Legal Director at wbookler@seniorlawcenter.org and use “Fels Intern Application” in the subject line.
