SeniorLAW Center’s Project S.A.F.E. Coordinator, Dana Goldberg, Esq. presented at the 26th annual National Adult Protective Services Association (NAPSA) Conference in Orlando with Joe Snyder, Director and Jennifer Spoerie, Supervisor, Older Adult Protective Services of the Philadelphia Corporation for Aging. Dana, Joe and Jennifer presented “It Takes a Team: The Philadelphia Elder Financial Exploitation Prevention Taskforce” on October 2, 2015 at NAPSA’s Financial Exploitation Summit. Professionals from all over the nation were in attendance and other topics of discussion included Regulatory, Educational and Legislative Initiatives to Protect Elders from Financial Exploitation and Tips from Experts: Improving Gaps and Law Enforcement Investigations of Financial Exploitation.
Older Adult Protective Services (OAPS) is a social services program provided by state and local governments nationwide serving seniors and adults with disabilities who are in need of assistance. OAPS workers frequently serve as first responders in cases of abuse, neglect or exploitation, working closely with a wide variety of allied professionals such as physicians, nurses, paramedics, firefighters and law enforcement officers. Most seniors and adults with disabilities live independently without assistance, however, some face abuse or neglect by others and need trained professionals to advocate on their behalf. Others may simply be struggling with routine activities and benefit from in-home support services to maintain their health and independence. OAPS helps by assessing each individual’s unique needs, then developing a service plan to maintain his/her safety, health and independence.
