SeniorLAW Center summer pro bono event with Exelon/PECO, Blank Rome and friends brings “All Hands In” to serve seniors!

PECO Group Shot 3

On July 11, 2014 SeniorLAW Center partnered with the legal departments of Exelon Corporation and PECO Energy Company and the Blank Rome law firm to draft wills and other life planning documents for our senior clients.  The event, which was held at the beautiful West Philadelphia Senior Community Center, resulted in 39 SLC clients (from 60-89 years old) receiving 120 documents, including simple wills, living wills, and health care and financial powers of attorney.

This was a particularly special event as Exelon’s “All Hands In” project for 2014, and was attendePECO 4d by counsel from as far away as Chicago, including Exelon’s General Counsel, Darryl Bradford!  The scope of the project was ambitious, and its smooth execution was due to the great teamwork and hard work by all of the volunteers, including leaders Matt Gutt of Exelon and Kathy Ochroch of Blank Rome.  In addition to its legal expertise, Blank Rome provided all of the laptops and printers – and most importantly, the technical assistance – needed to complete the clients’ documents.

Volunteers from PECO’s Latino employee affinity group (Organization of Latinos at Exelon (OLE)) helped interpret for Spanish-speaking clients, and other PECO volunteers provided information to SLC clients and residents of the Community Center on PECO’s low income assistance programs.  All told, over 65 attorneys, paralegals, legal assistants, and other volunteers came together to make this event a success.  Following the event, volunteers attended a reception hosted by Exelon at Pagano’s Market & Bar, where they enjoyed food, drinks and the gorgeous weather!

SLC’s clients, many of whom had been waiting for some time to have their documents drafted, have expressed their gratitude for the excellent and attentive services provided by the volunteers.  SLC wishes to thank Exelon Corporation, PECO Energy, and Blank Rome for helping make this event so successful.  We also thank the attorneys and other volunteers from the corporate legal departments from Wawa, Verizon, Farmer’s Insurance, and Cigna who responded to Exelon’s call for additional volunteers and participated in the event.  Finally, SLC thanks Pat Stanley, the Director of the West Philadelphia Senior Community Center, for opening the doors of this wonderful facility to us and our clients.

PECO 5We are proud and grateful for our excellent partnership with Exelon and PECO, Blank RoPECO1me and our many new partners!  You have helped make a real difference in the lives of Pennsylvania seniors in need.
