On Monday, March 16th, SeniorLAW Center submitted comments to the Department of Housing and Urban Development concerning the Department’s Proposed Rule, “Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing.”
The Proposed Rule would replace the current 2015 Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing Rule. SeniorLAW Center’s Jacob Speidel and Amelia Fanelli expressed deep concern that the proposed redefinition of fair housing fails to address significant systemic barriers to exercising housing choices. Philadelphia is one of the most segregated cities in America, and a definition of fair housing that neither acknowledges nor addresses this reality weakens our ability to combat and end discrimination and segregation today. SeniorLAW Center expressed further concern that the Proposed Rule deemphasizes the community engagement emphasized in the 2015 Rule, and discouraged rigorous data collection. SeniorLAW Center urged the Department of Housing and Urban Development to consider the best interests of our seniors and our communities by returning to the 2015 Rule.
