SeniorLAW Center’s Kinship Program Featured in the Legal Intelligencer

SeniorLAW Center has been a leader in the fight for grandparents’ rights over the past three decades, providing legal representation, education and advocacy. In addition to representing hundreds of grandparents, great-grandparents and other elders raising young children and educating thousands on their rights and the legal system, in Fausey v. Hiller , 851 A.2d 193 (PA Super. 2004) we organized a coalition of child, family and elder advocates throughout Pennsylvania to object to the challenge to grandparents’ standing to seek custody of their grandchildren, authoring an amicus brief to support grandparents’ rights. The August 2006, Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruling affirmed the lower court’s decision to grant a grandmother custody and upheld 23 Pa. C.S. Section 5311 the Grandparent Custody and Visitation Act as constitutional. Pennsylvania joins the other 49 states that have affirmed the rights of grandparents to seek custody of their grandchildren.
